Chapter Five
Laurelyn McLachlan

My eyes are closed and I’m listening to the sound of the waves. I’ve only been awake for a few minutes but the resonance is hypnotic so I’m drifting back into slumber when the bed shifts. My eyes pop open when the bed sheet slides down my body and I feel Jack Henry’s kisses against the bare skin of my lower back. “Are you awake?”
“I am now.”
He runs his hand over the valley where my spine curves inward. “Have I ever told you how much I love this dip?”
Is he kidding? Only like a bazillion times. “I believe you may have a time or two.”
His wet tongue glides upward and I bow reflexively, sending my bottom up from the bed, hitting him against his chest. My hair prickles as goosebumps spread from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. No matter how many times he does this, my body reacts the same. “Good grief. You’d think I’d become immune to that at some point.”
His palm slides up my thigh to my cheek and he rubs it in a circular motion. “Please don’t because I’ll never tire of seeing your body arch like that.”
I relax beneath his touch and his talented hands knead the muscles of my back as they make their way to my shoulders. I haven’t said anything but my body is rebelling after our frolic against the pole yesterday. A massage is very welcomed. “Mmm … you can stop doing that sometime next week.”
His fingers knead in circles and, again, my body erupts into chills. “So you like that, huh?”
“Mmm-hmm … just a little bit.”
“A massage is the least I can do since it’s my fault you’re sore.”
I lift my head from the pillow and peer over my shoulder at him. “I didn’t say I was sore.”
“You didn’t but your body speaks to me in other ways.”
Funny, I didn’t hear it say a thing. “How so?”
“It wasn’t your usual fuck-me-harder moan I heard when I pushed your legs back.” He leans down to kiss the side of my neck. “Your legs were guarded so I knew you were probably feeling the aftermath of our pole excursion.” He kisses the side of my face. “I’m sure it’s worse today so we’re taking a break from sex so you can recuperate.”
I recall how gentle and loving Jack Henry was last night while we christened our honeymoon bed. His whole demeanor was different, but he was that way before, possibly discerning how sore I was. “Is that why you were so gentle with me?”
“Partly.”
“What’s the other reason?”
“I wanted to make love to you.” He presses his nose against my hair and inhales deeply. “I’m boorish with you too often. I should be gentler.”
I roll, forcing him to move from my back. “Listen up, McLachlan.” He moves to his side and we’re face to face. “I love your gentle side but I’m not a porcelain doll. I love it when you fuck me hard.” I grab his chin and give it a squeeze. “Sometimes I need you to be a caveman. I crave it. Understand?”
He nods in agreement. “Yes, ma’am.”

Excerpt

Rachel lifted her face and pressed a kiss to her favorite arm her spot. “Devin, all of these years, I’ve been trying so hard to replace you, to make my mind forget by filling it with…men. But, every time, Dev. Every single time, I was disappointed. No one can ever be you because you are the only one for me. And to answer your question, yes. I’m more than okay. That wasn’t just sex, Devin. That was you, bringing me back to life. I want to do that over, and over and over again. And next time,” she rolled over to face him, a glint in her eye. “I want it like I know you wanted to do it this time. Hard, fast, and in whatever position you want it. We had some fabulous times together. Let’s do that again.” “I want nothing more than to do it all,” Devin said, his voice low. “But don’t mistake what just happened for me just being gentle on you. I wanted to make love to you, to show you what you mean to me. I can tell you all day long, but I wanted you to feel it; feel me. My heart is beating only for you. My body is yours. I love you, Rachel.” She climbed back on top of him, pressing her body against him. “Devin,” she said, her face even with his. Pressing kisses to his eyes, nose, then lips, her body started shaking. Why was this so hard for her? She knew it like she knew her own name, but saying it was so difficult for her. “I…” She dipped her head down and kissed his ear, running her tongue along it, then his neck. When goose bumps broke out on his body, she grinned against his neck. Going back to his lips, she put her hands against his face and looked at him in the eyes. “I love your eyes,” she whispered. “And your face. God help me, that body is to die for. But Devin?” “Yes.” “What I really love?” Rachel paused, willing her body to stop quivering. “Is you. I always have.” There, that wasn’t so bad. “I have since the night I met you, and I’ve never stopped. All this time, all these years, it’s only been you for me, Dev. I know we have shit to work through. But, I love you. I do. I don’t think there will ever be a moment where I’m not completely and totally in love with you.”

When life crashes down around us, how hard are we willing to fight for the one thing we can’t live without, each other?

Life is full of moments.
Big moments.
Little moments.
And none of them are inconsequential.
Every single moment prepares you for that one instance that defines your life. You must overcome all your fears, confront the demons that chase you, and cleanse the poison that clings to your soul or you risk the chance of losing everything.

Mine started the minute Rylee fell out of that damn storage closet. She made me feel. Made me whole when all I thought I could ever be was incomplete. Became the lifeline I never knew I needed. Hell yes, she’s worth the fight…but how do you fight for someone you know you don’t deserve?

Love is full of ups and downs.
Heart stopping highs.
Soul shattering lows.
And none of them are insignificant.
Love is a racecourse of unexpected twists and turns that must be negotiated. You have to break down walls, learn to trust, and heal from your past in order to win. But sometimes it’s the expected that’s the hardest to hold on to.

Colton has healed and completed me, stolen my heart, and made me realize our love’s not predictable nor perfect—it’s bent. And bent’s okay. But when outside factors put our relationship to the test, what lengths will I have to go to prove to him that he’s worth the fight?

Whoever said love is patient and love is kind, never met the two of us. We know our love is worth it—have acknowledged that we were meant to be—but when our pasts crash into our future, will the repercussions make us stronger or break us apart?

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us." - Marianne Williamson

We live in a world of darkness and shadows,
where monsters hide and aim to ruin.
And they did.
They ruined us and turned our dreams into nightmares.
But now we're back.
And we're fighting.
Not just for us, or for each other, but for our light.

~So Much More Than 5 Stars~

“She turned her head and lifted her chin to face me. Her smile caught me off guard. Our eyes locked. Then: Thump. Thump. But it was different this time. Not nerves, or anxiety. It was like the world’s way of telling me that I was alive, and to pay attention” - Logan

This is the third book in this series, and the whole gang is back, thank God! I missed these characters too much. Amanda, Logan, Micky, Jake, Cam, Luce, Ethan, Tristan they’re all back. This is book two of Amanda and Logan’s story. It picks up directly where we left off in More Than Her. I was heartbroken at the end of More Than Her and the heartbreak overflows right into this next book. Jay McLean has brought these characters to life in such a way to me, they’re real. I felt all of their pain, suffering, heartbreak, frustration, longing, I need to stop there. I read More Than Him in two settings, yep I said two.

While I was reading More Than Him I felt like a voyeur. Has that ever happened to you as a reader? I get so engrossed in a story sometimes, I feel like I’m in it, watching it play out in front of me...I was so entranced with this story, everything outside of it faded away. The reasoning, I adore these characters, I have fallen in love with each one of them. I bask in the hilarity of the conversations and situations they find themselves in. The dialogue is beautiful, heartbreaking; gut busting funny, haunting and realistic. Sometimes as beautiful as it is dialogue in a story can seem scripted, in More Than Him, it’s so real and unfiltered. For me, this makes it even more powerful and effecting. The agony in parts is palatable and hangs thick in air. You can almost taste the fear. Jay’s style of writing calls to me, as a reader and I am addicted.

More Than Him was extremely emotional and beautifully written. We are given more insights into Logan’s past and his reasoning behind his decisions. We watch Amanda struggle with her emotional scars and healing, while missing and hating Logan. Waiting for these two to figure it all out is painful and frustrating, but in the best possible way. I cried reading Logan’s recounts of his past, his journal entries. His journal entries are touching and made my heart ache. His self doubt, guilt, his memories, they are eating him alive from the inside out. I wanted to hold him, and reassure him that it would be okay. He broke my heart in his suffering. Logan however is finally diagnosed with PTSD and undergoing treatment. Logan’s perseverance, loyalty and determination are inspiring. Amanda’s ability to forgive, trudge forward and love unconditionally will leave you in awe.

“You know, one day, baby, I’m going to take your nightmares and turn them into dreams.” - Amanda

“He threaded his fingers through my hair and moved it away from my face. “It means shadow passes, light remains. You’re my light, Amanda. In a life full of shadows, and darkness, and monsters, you’re my light. When the blackness fades and the memories subside, you’ll be there. You’re always there.” - Logan

This is a wonderfully written love story. Logan and Amanda’s love will touch you, deep down on a very basic level. It is love in its purest form. It’s not perfect, but love is never perfect, it’s messy, painful, and unrelenting. These two characters that against ALL odds should have never made it to the other side, struggle and stumble to make it right, to be happy. The point here, they try. They really try.

He held me tighter. “We got a lot of shit to work through.” “Yeah,” I agreed. “But once we do we’re going to be amazing” ~Amanda and Logan

The ending is poignant and touching. It leaves you grinning. I was warm and fuzzy finishing this one. I cannot possibly tell you how badly you need to read these books.

I loved them and will re-read them eleventy three times.” - Angie

A sexy, tall, tattooed stranger, but a stranger nonetheless.

How was I to know that a chance meeting with this man, Xander Kane, was going to change my life?
